We all thought free agency had for the most part run its course in Washington. But then Philadelphia released DeSean Jackson and the Washington Redskins swooped in, landing the biggest free agent of the year.

Best of all, Washington didn’t have to guarantee $40 million and send next year’s draft class north.

This week the boys discuss the acquisition of Jackson and what it could mean for this team. There is also the return of Ryan Clark.

Pappas calls it the best free agent period the Redskins have had in years.

New Skinscast Episode – Free agency 2014

The Redskins’ free agency has been much quieter than folks anticipated. There have been signings, and a few names of note; but nothing like what was expected given the millions of dollars they had to spend.

This week the boys take a look at the free agency period in Washington to-date. They assess the talent that has been brought in, and where there are still needs. One need was safety. Should the Redskins have pulled the trigger on one of the safeties? Why didn’t they? What can they do now that they are gone? Is the return of Brandon Meriweather enough?

Of course, the period isn’t over and the guys wonder what other moves could be made. And they play a game of make-a-wish.

It didn’t take long, just a matter of hours, before Mike Shanahan was sent packing, dragging his golden parachute behind as he left Washington.

But then something funny happened, Bruce Allen assumed the mantle of traditional GM, conducted a coaching search, and landed a young up and coming coordinator to take the helm at Redskins Park.

Now that’s different.

This week the boys break down the end of the Shanahan era in D.C. They assess the new head coach Jay Gruden and wonder if this hire was telegraphed.

Then there’s the players. This offseason is one of the most important ones in years for the Redskins. With all the needs, the team cannot afford to get it wrong. The boys identify the holes and discuss the likelihood of key players such as Brian Orakpo and DeAngelo Hall staying in Washington.

The Redskins trotted out a new quarterback, and achieved the same results; losing their sixth straight game, this time to the Falcons.

But this game was different. Kirk Cousins had flashes of real effectiveness with the offense, and at times you thought; ‘this is how it is supposed to look.’

This week the boys break down Cousins’ performance. They look at what he did well, and not so well. Coach-watch is underway, and the boys look at the chances of a Mike Shanahan return.

By the way; it’s Dallas week.

New Skinscast Episode – Living in interesting times

Thursday, December 12th, 2013

skinscastbang

Wednesday’s Mike Shanahan press conference was one of the most fascinating events in recent Redskins history. The current situation presents so many compelling subplots, we hardly know where to begin.

The conventional wisdom is Shanahan will soon be gone, dismissed by Daniel Snyder. But on the way out a story was leaked saying Shanahan wanted to quit at the end of last year because of Snyder’s favoritism towards Robert Griffin III. Further, Shanahan has benched Griffin in favor of Kirk Cousins starting the rest of the year. Shanahan claims it is to protect Griffin, but what will this say about Griffin if Cousins is successful? And what of the news that Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen were briefed in advance on the benching of Griffin? Does that change the subplot?

This week the boys do their best to deconstruct current events. They ask the tough questions about Shanahan’s motives and Griffin’s development; and what these mean for the future. And is that Pappas sticking up for Dan Snyder?

Note: A lot of emotion in this week’s episode, which brings some salty language and strong opinions, which do not necessarily reflect those of the show.

Enjoy!
