Washington Redskins Fall To Baltimore Ravens, QB Competition Rages On

Washington Redskins 2011 Football Headshots

More questions than answers remain in the Washington Redskins quarterback battle following Thursday’s 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Forget the fact the Redskins lost the game in the closing seconds thanks to an impressive series of plays from rookie quarterback Tyrod Taylor. In this case, the scoreboard is not nearly as important as the stat line.

John Beck led the team on an impressive 12-play, 97-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Austin. But that was playing with his second-team offense and against the Ravens’ backup defense.

Beck said Austin was “huge” on that drive.

Overall, Beck was 6-of-10 for 108 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

Rex Grossman led the Redskins on two scoring drives. The first was capped by a 37-yard touchdown run by Tim Hightower.

The second was more impressive. The veteran led the team on an 8-play, 80-yard scoring drive that finished with a 24-yard touchdown strike to Santana Moss.

In all, Grossman was 8-of-15 for 112 yards and one touchdown on the night.

Grossman is also unsure if he did enough to win the starting job.

“I’m not sure,” he told CSN’s Kelli Johnson when asked if he thought he did enough to win the job. “I’m proud of the way I’ve played the whole preseason . . I don’t know how much we’re going to play next week. It is what it is. I feel good about it. I don’t make those decisions.”

A remarkable thing happened in Dallas: the backup quarterback was promoted to the role of starter and for a few brief moments; we saw what the offense is supposed to look like. But as often happens with Washington, the comeback stalled, the dream died, and the Redskins lost another close one.

This week the boys discuss the solid performance of Rex Grossman at quarterback – was it fluke, or the emergence of something fantastic? There is also the question of Donovan McNabb and his future in Washington. The gang touches on other performances as well and start to look who will, or should, be back next year.

And oh yea, there’s a game in Jacksonville this weekend.

Enjoy!

Weeding out the suckers – In a New York minute

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

By John Pappas

The Washington Redskins marched into the New Meadowlands Stadium with something to prove. After all, they were there to play one of the best defenses in football in the Jets. Plus, they were coming off a less than stellar showing last week against Baltimore.

The game against the Ravens exposed portions of the Redskins’ game. Baltimore was able to wreak havoc with defensive pressure; sacking Washington’s quarterbacks, stuffing the run, and keeping them almost completely off the score board. And the Ravens offense was able to hang 23 points on the defense, 13 against the first team. Following the paltry three-point effort, the Redskins were keen to improve against a Jets team that appeared in the AFC Championship game last year.

Washington responded by gutting-out a well-earned 16-11 victory. The defense was magnificent in creating four turnovers. The offense was able to move the ball against one of the best defenses in the league.

Woven throughout was the reality that first cuts occur this Tuesday and for some players, Friday’s game would be their last chance to make a statement.

DeAngelo Hall – Hot

Hall’s interception has our vote for defensive play of the preseason. It was a play not a lot of cornerbacks can make because it required three things in equal measure; the vision to see where the quarterback was going to throw, the presence to know where help was, and the stones to make the split-second decision to try and intercept.

Weeding out the suckers – Buffaloed Bills

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

By John Pappas

Let’s be clear; the Washington Redskins beat the crap out of the Buffalo Bills Friday night.  They beat them on offense.  They beat them on defense.  They beat them on special teams.  There were touchdowns, turnovers, and big plays.  And at the end of the game, the score read Washington 42, Buffalo 17.

The pundits pointed out the historical context in terms of points scored and margin of victory.  Apparently it was the biggest victory in like, a long time.

Washington fans were elated with the victory, and visions of football glory filled their heads.  The more analytical however, pointed out that it was just a preseason game, and asked a sensible question: Was the lopsided victory more a result of a good Washington team, or rather a bad Buffalo team?

The answer is yes.

Despite the score, Washington was not perfect.  They made their share of mistakes, especially early, when the first teamers were in.  And it can be argued that it was the second team who made the biggest plays.  Third teamers had their moments, good and bad.

Here is where we sort it out.  We highlight who did well, who did not, and who might want to call a realtor.

Rex Grossman – Hot

Grossman was stellar in his preseason debut for Washington. Grossman went 11-for-18, 140 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a rating of 122.5.  While Donovan McNabb was effective as expected going 5-for-8, 58 yards and a rating of 124, Grossman opened eyes with his comfort in the offense, and ability to make plays, especially on third down.

Early indications

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

It is still very early in the preseason.  In fact, the Redskins haven’t played a single snap of football.  But after nearly two weeks of training camp, storylines are starting to emerge.  In the midst of training camp battles, some players are differentiating themselves, while others struggle.  And while it is too early to close the book on anyone in camp, there are subplots going into the games that bear watching.

Trent Williams

Williams looks to be the real deal at left tackle.  And there’s a lot to love about his playing so far.  It starts with footwork.  Williams has very quick feet for a big man, and has been adept at getting back into his stance on pass pro.  He gets back quickly and is rarely out of position after the snap.  When hit, he recovers well.  The next thing you notice is his balance and technique.  Williams plays within himself, doesn’t over-reach, keeps his head up on a swivel, and has excellent punch with his hands.

On run blocking, Williams is athletic and powerful at the point of attack.  He moves well in space and has shown the ability to shed primary blocks to chip off guys further downfield.  This will create opportunities for backs beyond the line of scrimmage.

Williams hasn’t won every battle in camp, but has won more than his share.  Not bad, considering he faces guys like Brian Orakpo every day in practice.  It will be interesting to see how Williams handles defenders in preseason as he prepares for week 1 against DeMarcus Ware and the Dallas Cowboys.

Right of center

The signing of Artis Hicks and trade for Jammal Brown looks great on paper.  Brown is just one injury removed from the Pro Bowl, and Hicks has been a serviceable starter in the league.  Based on camp however, the right side of the offensive line remains an area of concern.
