Haynesworth suspended – Who’s to blame?

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

By John Pappas

The Redskins announced today they have suspended Albert Haynesworth for the remainder of the season for “conduct detrimental to the club.” In announcing ths suspension, the team released the following from head coach Mike Shanahan:

“Despite the club’s numerous attempts to persuade Albert Haynesworth to abide by the terms of his contract, he has repeatedly refused to cooperate with our coaching staff in a variety of ways over an extended period of time. Among other things, he has consistently indicated to our defensive coaches that he refuses to play in our base defense or on first-down or second-down nickel situations. He has also refused to follow the instructions of our coaches both during weekly practices and during actual games as well.

“Yesterday, when Albert was at Redskin Park, he told our General Manager Bruce Allen that he [Haynesworth] would no longer speak with me. Although suspending any player is not a decision that a head coach enters into lightly, I believe the situation has reached the point where the club clearly has no alternative.”

While this topic will dominate the news cycle today, and be front and center for tonight’s recording of the next podcast, it begs the question of how the Redskins got here, and who is to blame. At the risk of pre-empting my own show, I’ll go ahead and answer the question.

The blame lies at the feet of Mike Shanahan.

It is Shanahan’s fault the team paid Haynesworth the $21 million and took his word he would be a good citizen despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary, and Haynesworth’s own admission he had no interest in playing in a 3-4 front. This is the same 3-4 front by the way, that Shanahan insisted Washington adopt, despite an accute lack of 3-4 talent on the team.

It is likewise Shanahan’s arrogance to think he could change Haynesworth by sheer will. Haynesworth is a 9th-year player who got his money. He is also a guy who is quite good at being a tackle in a 4-3 front. What in the hell does he care what Shanahan wants, or what the team expects?

After a strong start in their first preseason game, disappointment came calling for the Washington Redskins Saturday in the form of the Baltimore Ravens, and a 23-3 loss at FedEx Field. Baltimore got the best of Washington and then some in the preseason battle for regional bragging rights.

For the Redskins, It was a slice of humble pie served too soon following a big win last week.

Following the high-flying affair against Buffalo, fans of the Washington Redskins were on top of the world. Their team had dismantled the Bills, creating big plays, and scoring almost at will. Just eight days later, they were watching their team lose by almost three touchdowns and wondering how good Washington really is.

As one writer put it; the win against Buffalo had fans buying tickets to the Super Bowl – now they were jumping off of buildings.

Magnificent, but not flawless

Let us allow the team a moment to enjoy this one.  Yes, we will say it was only a preseason game.  We will of course point out that it came against a very poor team in Buffalo.  But the results are the results, and 42 points on the board with a margin of victory of 25 is something fans of the Washington Redskins have not seen for a while in the preseason.

Not since Osaka!

But while Steve Spurrier’s first foray into NFL football turned into a fool’s errand, these new-look Redskins are being assembled and managed by a guy in Mike Shanahan who knows a lot about this league, and a lot about winning at this level.

A whole lot.

Granted, no-one can get too excited about a first preseason game.  Neither team bothered to game-plan, match-ups weren’t exploited, and it was about as vanilla of football as you are apt to see.

But unlike recent years, Washington was able to execute.  They threw, they caught, they ran, they made plays and they scored,  Consider the results: 352 total yards, 42 points scored, 100-percent red zone efficiency, 76 offensive plays, 140 yards rushing, three turnovers, a punt return for a touchdown, a time of possession advantage of almost 13 minutes, and four passes of 20 yards or more.

Then there was the historical context.

Practice

The team has a day off from practice today ahead of tomorrow’s game against Buffalo.

Tomorrow’s game

The Redskins open the preseason when they play the Buffalo Bills tomorrow night at FedEx Field.  The game will be televised locally on NBC4, and Comcast Sportsnet.  It will air nationally on the NFL Network.  Kenny Albert and Joe Theisman will man the booth, with Rick “Doc” Walker on the sidelines.  Kickoff is at 7:30PM.

Shanahan

Tomorrow’s game versus the Buffalo Bills will be head coach Mike Shanahan’s first game on the sidelines for the Washington Redskins.  Shanahan brings a new offense and defense to Washington (along with a new coaching staff and players), and tomorrow will be the first opportunity to see how they look in anything close to game conditions.

For the record, Shanahan is Washington’s 28th coach and has a record of 146-98 in the regular season.

Camp Notes – 07/30/10

Trent Williams

Williams signed his contract early this morning and then practiced with the team.  He said he did not sleep at all last night.  Williams looked good in practice, but said he hopes to catch a few Zs before the afternoon session.

William’s contract is reportedly worth $60 million, with $36.5 million guaranteed.

“Don’t call me Dez”

Unlike other first round rookies, Williams will have no problems carry veteran players’ pads.

“I understand everybody’s a rookie one day,” said Williams.  “You’ve got to pay your rookie dues.  It could be a lot worse than just carrying shoulder pads, so I’m happy with that.”

Haynesworth

Albert Haynesworth failed the conditioning test again today and did not practice.  Following practice, Redskins strength & conditioning coach Ray Wright spoke about the test.
