Haynesworth passes his test

It was a day of firsts at Redskins Park.  Albert Haynesworth passed his conditioning test today.  He also spoke to the media, giving a 10-second statement.  It was also the first day that defensive coordinator Jim Haslett has spoken to the media this camp.

Haynesworth passed his conditioning test with times of 66 and 70 seconds, according to head coach Mike Shanahan.  Haynesworth then participated in squad drills, before having his left knee heavily wrapped and sitting out the team portion of practice.

The team said following practice it was always intended Haynesworth would skip today’s team practice.

Haynesworth gave a brief statement to the press after practice.

“The test is over and, you know, now it’s back to playing football,” said Haynesworth. “I want to thank all the fans for coming out and still supporting me and still wearing 92 jerseys and still believing in me.”

Following practice, most questions revolved around Haynesworth.

“A lot of people are going to look at him not being here in the offseason,” said Phillip Daniels.  “A lot was said.  But now it’s time to play football.  He’s a big key to have moving forward, and it’s good to have him out there.”

What is really going on with Haynesworth?

It seems that everybody is doing it these days.  Reporters, retired football players, even the Commissioner of the NFL.  They are all doing, and passing the shuttle conditioning test that Albert Haynesworth has not, but needs to in order to get on the field.

After stiffing Mike Shanahan and the Washington Redskins all offseason, Haynesworth reported to training camp a week ago much lighter than at the end of the season.  To look at him you would think he’s in much better shape.  The only problem is Haynesworth has yet to complete the test recently become so popular with the media and others.

And until he does, or the team relents, he won’t be allowed to play.  Shanahan’s reasoning on this appears to be sound, and is looking more prescient every day Haynesworth is out.  Shanahan does not want to get a guy hurt who is not is shape.  And since Haynesworth was not there during the offseason conditioning program and OTAs, the team has to validate that he is ready to play.  Hence the test.

Trent Williams

Williams signed his contract early this morning and then practiced with the team.  He said he did not sleep at all last night.  Williams looked good in practice, but said he hopes to catch a few Zs before the afternoon session.

William’s contract is reportedly worth $60 million, with $36.5 million guaranteed.

“Don’t call me Dez”

Unlike other first round rookies, Williams will have no problems carry veteran players’ pads.

“I understand everybody’s a rookie one day,” said Williams.  “You’ve got to pay your rookie dues.  It could be a lot worse than just carrying shoulder pads, so I’m happy with that.”

Haynesworth

Albert Haynesworth failed the conditioning test again today and did not practice.  Following practice, Redskins strength & conditioning coach Ray Wright spoke about the test.

Payback time

This here is what you call Mike Shanahan getting his pound of flesh.

Albert Haynesworth showed up today nice and early, and was subjected to a conditioning test.  Depending on whom you believe, Haynesworth either failed the second part of the test, or actually passed but Shanahan thought he took too long between part one and two and ordered the whole thing done again, which he then failed.

No matter.  What was important is that Haynesworth had to spend the portion of practice he was out on the fields working out individually with the training staff doing drills.  He also got jeered by the crowd for his trouble.

That probably made Shanahan smile on the inside.
