skinscastbang

After a stunningly miserable performance in New York, Mike Shanahan decided to take drastic measures…and suspended a guy who didn’t even play.

This week the boys take a look at the Albert Haynesworth suspension, how it came to this point, and what it means moving forward. They also examine the game against the Giants, the prospects the rest of the way this year, and take just a little glance towards the offseason.

John Keim and Rick Snider from the Washington Examiner are back, and they offer their take on the Haynesworth saga.

And lest we forget, there is a game this Sunday. Everyone offers their prediction, and it is better than you might think.

Enjoy!

Haynesworth suspended – Who’s to blame?

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

By John Pappas

The Redskins announced today they have suspended Albert Haynesworth for the remainder of the season for “conduct detrimental to the club.” In announcing ths suspension, the team released the following from head coach Mike Shanahan:

“Despite the club’s numerous attempts to persuade Albert Haynesworth to abide by the terms of his contract, he has repeatedly refused to cooperate with our coaching staff in a variety of ways over an extended period of time. Among other things, he has consistently indicated to our defensive coaches that he refuses to play in our base defense or on first-down or second-down nickel situations. He has also refused to follow the instructions of our coaches both during weekly practices and during actual games as well.

“Yesterday, when Albert was at Redskin Park, he told our General Manager Bruce Allen that he [Haynesworth] would no longer speak with me. Although suspending any player is not a decision that a head coach enters into lightly, I believe the situation has reached the point where the club clearly has no alternative.”

While this topic will dominate the news cycle today, and be front and center for tonight’s recording of the next podcast, it begs the question of how the Redskins got here, and who is to blame. At the risk of pre-empting my own show, I’ll go ahead and answer the question.

The blame lies at the feet of Mike Shanahan.

It is Shanahan’s fault the team paid Haynesworth the $21 million and took his word he would be a good citizen despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary, and Haynesworth’s own admission he had no interest in playing in a 3-4 front. This is the same 3-4 front by the way, that Shanahan insisted Washington adopt, despite an accute lack of 3-4 talent on the team.

It is likewise Shanahan’s arrogance to think he could change Haynesworth by sheer will. Haynesworth is a 9th-year player who got his money. He is also a guy who is quite good at being a tackle in a 4-3 front. What in the hell does he care what Shanahan wants, or what the team expects?

Weeding out the suckers – In a New York minute

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

By John Pappas

The Washington Redskins marched into the New Meadowlands Stadium with something to prove. After all, they were there to play one of the best defenses in football in the Jets. Plus, they were coming off a less than stellar showing last week against Baltimore.

The game against the Ravens exposed portions of the Redskins’ game. Baltimore was able to wreak havoc with defensive pressure; sacking Washington’s quarterbacks, stuffing the run, and keeping them almost completely off the score board. And the Ravens offense was able to hang 23 points on the defense, 13 against the first team. Following the paltry three-point effort, the Redskins were keen to improve against a Jets team that appeared in the AFC Championship game last year.

Washington responded by gutting-out a well-earned 16-11 victory. The defense was magnificent in creating four turnovers. The offense was able to move the ball against one of the best defenses in the league.

Woven throughout was the reality that first cuts occur this Tuesday and for some players, Friday’s game would be their last chance to make a statement.

DeAngelo Hall – Hot

Hall’s interception has our vote for defensive play of the preseason. It was a play not a lot of cornerbacks can make because it required three things in equal measure; the vision to see where the quarterback was going to throw, the presence to know where help was, and the stones to make the split-second decision to try and intercept.

Weeding out the suckers – Buffaloed Bills

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

By John Pappas
Skinscast Editor

Let’s be clear; the Washington Redskins beat the crap out of the Buffalo Bills Friday night.  They beat them on offense.  They beat them on defense.  They beat them on special teams.  There were touchdowns, turnovers, and big plays.  And at the end of the game, the score read Washington 42, Buffalo 17.

The pundits pointed out the historical context in terms of points scored and margin of victory.  Apparently it was the biggest victory in like, a long time.

Washington fans were elated with the victory, and visions of football glory filled their heads.  The more analytical however, pointed out that it was just a preseason game, and asked a sensible question: Was the lopsided victory more a result of a good Washington team, or rather a bad Buffalo team?

The answer is yes.

Despite the score, Washington was not perfect.  They made their share of mistakes, especially early, when the first teamers were in.  And it can be argued that it was the second team who made the biggest plays.  Third teamers had their moments, good and bad.

Here is where we sort it out.  We highlight who did well, who did not, and who might want to call a realtor.

Rex Grossman – Hot

Grossman was stellar in his preseason debut for Washington. Grossman went 11-for-18, 140 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a rating of 122.5.  While Donovan McNabb was effective as expected going 5-for-8, 58 yards and a rating of 124, Grossman opened eyes with his comfort in the offense, and ability to make plays, especially on third down.

Practice

The team has a day off from practice today ahead of tomorrow’s game against Buffalo.

Tomorrow’s game

The Redskins open the preseason when they play the Buffalo Bills tomorrow night at FedEx Field.  The game will be televised locally on NBC4, and Comcast Sportsnet.  It will air nationally on the NFL Network.  Kenny Albert and Joe Theisman will man the booth, with Rick “Doc” Walker on the sidelines.  Kickoff is at 7:30PM.

Shanahan

Tomorrow’s game versus the Buffalo Bills will be head coach Mike Shanahan’s first game on the sidelines for the Washington Redskins.  Shanahan brings a new offense and defense to Washington (along with a new coaching staff and players), and tomorrow will be the first opportunity to see how they look in anything close to game conditions.

For the record, Shanahan is Washington’s 28th coach and has a record of 146-98 in the regular season.
